Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
