They're Doing in America What They Performed to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study forecast his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who should not find it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a figure of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense of him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you ought to provide him your sweater as well.

The apparent and clear truth that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a kind of extreme compassion centered on the needy is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Finest Among Us

Hence I have become inspired to observe the determined opposition against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects of American history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the best about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, which is the example of the Savior. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most damaging of both America and Christianity did not happen; it represents both meekness and belief, a combination that committed US believers should embrace.
