Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain calls from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
